hollereen night - boo!

firstly, hollereen decor. officelady brought in a small supply cart & parked it beside her desk. the supply cart was wearing a sort of skirt. this skirt was made of black fabric decorated with little candy corns. my thought is that the cart was being turned into a decoration. my opinion? fail. here's what the fabric looked like -

officelady was also wearing a pumpkin sweater. now, see... i am a fan of the pumpkin sweater, in general. i can see that it is mocked far & wide, exclusively worn by dweebs. i can see that. however, i choose not to accept it. however, at the insistence of mini-me & my old man, i no longer wear the pumpkin sweater. the bunny sweater. the xmas tree sweater. ::sigh:: i am looking forward to turning 50 so i can legally wear the pull-on pants they advertise in the sunday paper inserts.

headlines from google news today: chinese shoppers shocked by tainted food scandal. oh, c'mon. how could that even be? there have been so many tainted food scandals lately in china. have shoppers there not been told of the others? and, this: one in five homeowners with mortgages underwater. hee hee... hrm.... fairly certain they don't mean the actual houses are underwater. but, it's still funny.

here is a lovely candy corn cake. i promise not to wear the pull-on pants if you will make one for me!!

30 October 2008

the eve of the eve of all hallows

went to vote today, and it took about an hour to stand on line & vote. that's a long time, but in the last presidential election, it took us at least 2 hours waiting. i don't remember exactly, but it was at least 2 hours. this was the last day to vote early - and last time, we voted on election day. that makes a difference, on both counts. if we would not have waited until the last day to vote early, the lines would not have been so long. if we would have waited until election day, the lines would have been twice as long.

tomorrow, i plan to take graham crackers to work for snack, but you cannot have any. if you want graham crackers, you will need to bring your own.

i don't think i am going to wear a costume tomorrow. firstly, b/c i don't have one. heh heh. yeah. seriously - i could dress up as, like, 50s girl with rolled blue jeans and a white tee shirt and tie a scarf around my neck, but sheesh, that is just boring. i was going to wear my cowgirl boots tomorrow, but that was before i remembered it's hollereen. i mean, i was just going to wear them b/c i like them, but i don't want folks to think i am trying to dress up like a cowgirl or something. b/c i don't need to dress up like a cowgirl - b/c i am a cowgirl.

halloween decor? really?

in case you didn't hear, two yahoos out in west hollywood, ca, put up an effigy of sarah palin. they say it is a halloween decoration. they have taken a manikin, dressed it up in a red business dress, put a wig on it & a pair of glasses. called it sarah palin, and hung it in effigy. that's right - they hung it. tied a rope around its neck & strung it up from the eaves outside the house. let us pause for a moment to consider that this is a vice presidential candidate & the governor of a state - who therefore by default deserves a modicum of respect. [pause to think] let us pause for a moment to consider what the outcry would have been had this been an effigy of barack obama. [pause to think] now that you have paused & thought... what do you think?

odometer - 214014.2 - poor ol' tired odometer, still making pretty rhymes

at the beanery, in my favorite booth, with my coffee & bagel. ah! it is difficult to explain what it is that i like about this place. they know how i order the same thing every time, but that's not it b/c i would just as soon be anonymous. they serve very good coffee, but it's not like it is off the charts fantabulous. the bagels are fresh, but sometimes the other patrons are extremely annoying with their performance conversations - designed for their neighbors to hear. not sure what it is exactly, but it's just something about having a place to be and feeling like it's mine. it's no treehouse, mind you, but it'll do until one comes along.

one thing, though - one rule for the coffeeshop - no one should be allowed to play videos outloud b/c it is just annoying. also annoying - how that cartoon i pasted in has open quotes but no closed quotes. think the drawer got confusalized with the !! and thought it was a ". it's a funny cartoon, though, so it stays. b/c this is my blog, and i make the rulz. for spelling & everything!

remember the rant from yesterday about not being told about a mtg today that i would need to participate in? well, i was told after the meeting that my contribution was masterful. that's right. i am da bomb. i am also hip to the groovy lingo b/c you know - i am da bomb.

you know what i hate about black pantyhose? how they show all those little catches that happen during the course of the day. not real rips, just little horizontal lines. makes 'em look worn, even if they are brand new. hate that. just hate hate hate it. next time - no pantyhose! i will color my legs w/ a sharpie!

27 October 2008

thisandthat

so this morning i went into my boss' office to confirm that a handout i was working on looked okay. looks fine. - he said - and, of course, this is what you'll be reading in the plenary session tomorrow. uh... plenary? yes. - he said - i sent the powerpoint out last week. um... powerpoint? yes. - he said - i will find it & send it again. which he did - he forwarded his message from last week, and guess what? i was not copied on the original message. if i had not gone to ask him about the layout of the handout today, i would not have even gone to the meeting tomorrow. wow.

one of the most magnificent things about watching football on tivo is not having to hear that "saved by zero" toyota commercial. it gets an a+ in annoying. tonight's m-n-f game is live & in person from a city quite near to moi. in this city today - there was a major zig ziglar motivational rahrah session with colin powell, rudy guiliani, pat summit, & bruce pearl. this motivational convention brought at least 16,000 additional people into town, severely frogging the morning rush hour. the convention was going to let out right about the time folks would be converging on downtown for the pre-game activities. nice timing. i mean, what eejit schedules a motivational convention the same day as m-n-f is in town?

this morning, someone put some yummy lemon pound cake by the coffee pot. the kind with the crunchy, sugary glaze on top. that's the best part - where the cake is brown & sort of split & crunchy itself at the top, and then that sugary glaze - mmmm. so, i removed the best part of one piece - just one piece - and popped it in my mouth. someone else probably likes cake bottoms, so i kindly left it for that person. mmmmm - yeah!

in a headline from the entertainment world - ll cool j has quit as the opening act for the jackson's tour. jackson's tour? there's a jackson's tour? wha da freak?

you know how on a suit jacket, the tails will be tacked together so that they don't get ripped during shipment & sales -- but you are supposed to cut the tails apart before you wear it? yeah, well, my boss was apparently wearing a new suit today. i did not think it was my place to tell him his tails were tied. heh heh. yeah.

26 October 2008

sunday morning

whenever my old man is doing something productive around the house or yard, i feel like i should be, also. i feel vaguely guilty about sitting doing "nothing" - on the computer, reading a book, etc. - when he's "working". but, he is often not "working" when i am -- like, if i am cooking, he could be just sitting checking his email. he does not feel guilty about that. and, he does not care at all if i am working when he is working. it's just me, and i don't know where it comes from. i feel like everyone should be working & playing on the same schedule.

yesterday, we both bought lottery tix. when we get them, we get 5 powerball tix on the same sheet. so, we both bought 5 for a total of 10, and guess what we won? that's right - nothing. another $10 invested in the higher education system. sheesh.

when i was a kid, we ate peanut butter. i mean, most kids do, right? we ate pb&j sandwiches, but also fluffernutters - pb & marshmallow cream - and pb & banana sandwiches. we ate pb on celery & on apples. somewhere along the line, i just sort of quit eating pb. sort of difficult to digest... but still, i could have it sometimes if i wanted it. i simply did not want it. until, like... oh, maybe a month ago. started putting it on my morning eggo & sometimes on toast when we have breakfast for supper. now, it seems like i want it all the time. what is up with that? too many years without it, and now i am trying to make up ground?? we get this kind - supposed to be good for you. still has a ton of fat & calories, but at least it has some redeeming qualities.

headline from friday's paper - analysts do not understand stock market. criminy - if they don't understand, where does that leave the rest of us?

25 October 2008

not much to say, really. graham crackers rock. that's about it.

sitting on the deck, eating graham crackers & drinking tea, watching vandy lose to duke on the stat tracker. if it wasn't for stupid vandy, it would be quite pleasant.

i would like you to know that i really like graham crackers. i just ate a whole pack, and i am thinking about eating more of them. if you have a problem with that, you can take it up with my grocer.

okay, enough sitting on the deck, and i do enjoy the fresh air, but it's a wee bit chilly, and the seat's not very comfy. let's go inside, shall we?

ah, much better. well, vandy lost their homecoming game to duke. that was really a game they should have won. they may not win another game this season, at this rate. ut plays later - kickoff in about an hour. maybe that will be a better game, but they're playing bamalama, so i doubt it. at least there will be pizza & beer, eh? heh heh.

finished the website assignment, and i'd post the link, but i am just not like that. suffice it to say that it works very well. thank you very much.

24 October 2008

friday

did you hear that the republican national committee spent $150,000 on a wardrobe for gov palin? that's a lot of cash, but if they want to spend their money that way, that is their choice. it's not taxpayer money - it's rnc money. still, it's a lot of money. but, anyway - someone called into the radio & said they bet "obama's wife" doesn't spend that much on clothes. well, guess what - palin is not mccain's wife. apples to oranges.

if you want an american made car, now's the time to buy one. i mean, they're not any more well-made than they have been. but, all the car makers are in such bad shape, you can get the cars cheap these days.

plans for tomorrow do not include cleaning the house. already did that. yurp! don't forget to remind me to pay the house note, eh? we ain't defaulted yet.

there's some laundry in the dryer. why don't you be a doll & go fold it for me?

23 October 2008

ridiculous! and other stuff

next monday night, the titans host the colts for monday night football. guess who was selected to sing the national anthem at the game? no, not me. hank freakin williams freakin junior. for reals. ridiculous!

congressman murtha of pennsylvania called the people of pennsylvania racist. he "apologized" for this by calling these people rednecks. these people are his constituents. ridiculous!

there is a woman at my work who, when you ask her how she is doing, she will say - doing well, by the grace of god. i would like to confirm that it is indeed by the grace of god that she is doing well b/c i have watched her put 10 packets of sugar in her coffee, and if that doesn't give her some sort of medical disorder, nothing will!

finished cleaning the house & need to give props to mini-me. you can clean the house in an hour, although let's be realistic & admit it's not a stellar cleaning job. but, it'll do. oh, it'll do just fine, b/c now i am done, and i've got my tea & graham crackers all set for snack time. yay!

there was something in a chat w/ elvis today that i wanted to put in here, but elvis turned the chat off the record, so i cannot get the text. aggravation. ridiculous!

22 October 2008

wondering why bill ayers is allowed to teach the teachers of the future.

my old man just told me that he heard today on the radio about a scientific experiment that proves that male coffee drinkers are more likely to grow breasts and female coffee drinkers are more likely to have small breasts. hrm?

working on a website for a couple folks. just got the assignment tonight. should be interesting. people generally don't have a good idea how much time things take. several days, i tell ya, several days! i have to find a good website, copy it, make it my own. you know, so people cannot tell i copied it. hur hur!

figured out what is wrong with the book i am reading. it's a translation from norse. or norwegian. whatevs. the problem is that the translation is awkward & poor. too bad, b/c it's probably a pretty good story, but who can find it in the swarm of stiff grammar & odd vocabulary choices.

time to go set up the coffee maker. who needs breasties?

21 October 2008

3 of today's haps

1 - the maintenance guys came by to see about pulling a cable for a printer, and one of them tried to convince me that a smoke alarm he had in his pocket was a space ship.

2 - if, in trying to fix a problem, you encounter additional issues/problems, stop. go back. start again. do not, under these circumstances, continue. you will only cause heartache for us all.

3 - britney got a hung jury for her trial for her crime of driving without a license. why was there a jury trial for a misdemeanor, anyway?

20 October 2008

this & that

40% of americans pay no income tax whatsoever. obama promises to reduce the tax burden on 95% of americans. for those who currently pay no income tax, obama will provide a tax credit. this means even though they pay no taxes, they will receive money from the govt.

jason's deli graham crackers are the best. have i mentioned this before? little nidge of vanilla & lemon. interesting combo, and so yummy.

currently watching chuck. still very much a fan of this show here in season 2. my old man, he's not so sure, but i like it alot. he likes the girls in short skirts, so many that's enough to keep us both tuned in. heh heh. oh, wait. the 2 girls on the show have ended up in the shower. fighting. not naked, but in the shower. it's a cat fight in the shower. classic geek material. what a hoot!

bagels or donuts? i am a bagel fan myself. books or magazines? me, books. jelly beans or chocolate chips? jelly beans. analog or digital? analog. tea or coffee? coffee. paper or plastic? cloth. heh heh.

19 October 2008

18 October 2008

got the run in - yay! really need to balance the checkbook, but what fun is that?

started another book. got a complaint. ::sigh:: where are all the really good books? this book has difficult names. swedish or norsk or somesuch. funny o's with lines thru them and a's with dots over them. if it were one name, it could simply be hardname, but it's all the names. just slows things down.

watching the vandy game right now off the tivo. vandy's at georgia, so that's not an easy game. halftime score - uga 14, vandy 7. not bad. in about an hour, we'll be leaving to find the ut game somewhere. it's on pay per view, and we're not gonna pay. well, i guess we will pay for food or whatever, but not for the game.

the local symphony keeps calling us to see how many tickets we want to this or that show - b/c we went to a christmas show years ago. when will they give up? if you see them, please tell them we aren't interested in tix. thanks.

17 October 2008

weekend plans

run
pay phone bill
watch vandy game
watch u-t game
watch titans game
play soccer
call mini-me

that's it for me. well, that's all i have planned - there is no telling what else might come up.

what have you got planned?

by special request....

finished the girl who stopped swimming by joshilyn jackson. it did turn out to be an okay book. not a great book, but okay. the biggest problem with it is that it is written in third person, but would have been stronger in first person. the point of view is exclusively that of the character laurel, so there is no reason it should not be from her directly. it would have been more powerful coming first hand from inside her head. not sure why it wasn't written that way, except maybe the author could not swing it. or, more likely, the author & the editor just simply didn't know what it was that was missing, or didn't think anything was missing.

barack obama's campaign gave $832,000 to acorn for the get-out-the-vote project. acorn is a housing program - what the hula are they doing getting out the vote, anyway? yes, acorn is the housing program that is behind so many of the subprime mortgages that are defaulting now.

this week i ran 4 miles on monday and 4 miles on tuesday and 4 miles on wednesday and 4 miles on thursday, and tomorrow i am taking a break!

is it me?

why do people annoy me so? it could not be me, could it? no. no way. it is they. they are annoyances. right? hey, you gotta back me up here. don't be annoying. heh heh.

there are the people that talk over the bathroom stalls, asking how am i doing & how was my weekend & every other such thing. firstly, i really do not wish to converse while i am peeing -- or doing whatever else i might be doing in there. and, with the autoflushers at work, there is vitually constant flushing going on, which it is well nigh impossible to talk over. there is no conversation so important that it cannot wait until the restroom transaction is complete.

then, there are the people who come into the office space talking. they just march right in & launch into a convo as if i am going to drop cold whatever i am doing & not only participate in the convo, but participate intelligently. the most i can usually come up with is, what's that again? i mean, c'mon, i am deep in the middle of shopping on ebay... er... i mean, decoding some spreadsheet so i can merge it with some other spreadsheet & create some master project plan or some such very important work. i am knee deep in files, and you expect me to acknowledge you as you barge in talking. there is no convo so important it cannot wait until i mark my place in my work.

those are both sort of interrupters. another type of annoyance are the office yellers. these ones... i just do not know how to deal with them. yelling out good morning or how was your weekend as i walk by to get to the coffee pot. i usually keep on walking, b/c how the hula am i supposed to know if you are talking to me -- sounds like you have small-talk tourette's - just yelling out random shizzle like that.

oh, that's just the tip of the annoyance iceberg. is it me? surely not. the world is peopled by eejits, right?

14 October 2008

an opinion & a learning

quote from an article - "But Palin, with plenty of abetment from McCain, has gotten it going again with the theme that Obama “is not a man who sees America like you and I see America." She’s selling Obama not as the black, but as the other. This obviously can appeal to racial fears and antagonisms."

opinion - to say palin's characterization of obama as the other is racist is simply wrong. she is characterizing him as the other because he is a democrat/socialist and she & mccain are republican/capitalist. to put it in a racial context is to put thoughts into her head & words into her mouth. this is a cheap ploy to characterize the mccain/palin campaign as racist, but i don't have enough faith in my fellow americans to think they will see through it. sorry. i just don't.

learning - i also learned today that of the $700billion designated for the bailout, $250billion is for banks. the money is intended to allow the banks to faithfully lend to each other, but there are no regulations in place with the $700billion, so there is nothing to stop the banks from handing the money out to shareholders.

fabulous. just fabulous.

oh. p.s. i really like the flobots. heh heh.

13 October 2008

today is columbus day. what did you discover?

i discovered:

- do not leave your banana unattended beside the microwave where your oatmeal is cooking. the banana might not be there when you get back. that is, if you work where i work, which is apparently a den of banana thieves.

- teething can cause ear aches in babies.

- diarrhea has a silent r.

- biscotti - with coffee it's a cookie, without coffee it's practically a weapon. not really a fact i discovered... more like a quote i discovered. which i like. b/c it is funny.

that's all i have now.

12 October 2008

different people do different things.

my old man likes the teevee on. like, when he walks into a room, if there is a teevee in that room, he wants it on. when he comes into the house, he will turn on the teevee in the kitchen and keep on moving. he's clearly not watching the teevee - he is not even in the room at all. i don't mind the teevee on, and sometimes i do want it on, but generally, i do not walk into a room & turn it on first-thing. if i am home alone, i am more likely to have it off than on. more likely to be on the computer or reading a book or cleaning the house or something. i like teevee a lot, but i don't mind the thoughts running around in my head when they want to.my old man takes naps. i take naps, too, but i am more likely on the weekend to sleep in. he will get up early and be all like how can you sleep so late?, but then in a few hours, he'll be asleep in the chair. it's all sleep, no matter when you take it. believe me, i am not against naps. i am against mocking someone for sleeping when you will be sleeping yourself in just a little while.my old man likes to go out. now, again, don't get me wrong. i like to go out, too. i like to get dressed up & go out, or even just plop in the car & go for a ride. but, i also like to stay in. and, there are times i would rather stay in. now, my old man will sit around & watch football, but he does not want to spend all day in the house. he has to get out & do something. i am content to shuffle around all day perusing the newspaper, slowly checking items off my to-do list, drinking some more coffee. puttering, they call it. just puttering around. getting things done, but not in any particular hurry. i think my old man gets nervous just thinking he will be in the same building all day long.right now, he's gone off to the gym to work out, and i stayed home to putter. i shall now go putter around the filing cabinet & get some filing done. it's nice to be productive & accomplish something, and it's nice to be able to do it on a flexible timetable.

11 October 2008

update: vandy lost.

just finished an unedited manuscript for a book from my work. it was fairly good, but of course, unedited & therefore, a wee bit rough. have also read another unedited manuscript from work, and liked the story of that one better. both will be published in the fall of 2009. i am not saying what they are b/c that will end up telling you where i work. yes, this entire paragraph is completely useless, but jeezumpete, you could say that about this whole blog, so why ya gettin' picky?

currently watching the vandy game on espn stat tracker. better than nothing, for sure, but a difficult way to watch a game. i could have purchased it on pay per view, but i am too cheap for that. vandy leads 7-3 at the half. go 'dores!

09 October 2008

today is not saturday.

took off work today to spend some quantity/quality time with mini-me, who was in for fall break. kept thinking it was saturday. but it's not. tomorrow's friday, and then we will get saturday. yeah!

saturday - vandy plays miss state at miss state. be sure & tune in - 1:30 central time. go 'dores! the titans & the mighty crappy green team are off this week.

finished that book king of lies, and it turned out to be really quite good. nice surprise. one never knows when one is picking books off the bargain pile. the current book, the girl who stopped swimming, is not showing as much promise. the set keeps changing - like from one paragraph to the next. it's disjointed & disorienting. it's probably a device the author is using - to juxtapose the past & present. the characters are introduced without establishing a full background for them, which is a good thing, because the story can be bogged down by character descriptions - but, it takes too long to establish the relationships between the characters & the story and the characters with each other. the characters just sort of hang out there waiting to be attached to each other. so, just like too much description, too little bogs down the story.

what book are you reading?

during the afternoon service on yom kippur, it is traditional to read the story of jonah & the whale.

06 October 2008

i'd rather be a geek.

if i asked you -- "can you get into the u:\ drive?" would you most likely (a) see if you could & respond to me affirmatively or negatively or (2) see if you could, and if you could, proceed to guess what i might do if i could get into the u:\, search out the presumably related files, proceed to mangle them in some way, and then drop them at my feet like a proud cat with a dead mouse?

when you ask me to show you how to do some computer thing, please do not proceed to click & open & choose & move & drag & click some more as if you magically understand how to do this thing that you asked me to show you how to do. wait until i give you instruction, or do not ask me at all.

when i am providing instruction on a work-related matter, at your desk, on my time, and you receive a personal phone call, please limit the call to less than 30 seconds by stating: "i will call you back." emphatically to the caller. tell the caller you are "working". do not proceed to discuss the status of ice cream supplies at your place of residence, ad infinitum, while giving me conspiratorial winks & nods as if i have a personal stake in your ice cream supplies.

weekend update

vandy beats auburn to go to 5-0!

titans beat ravens to go to 5-0!

crappy green team beats arrogant white team to go to... uh... you'd think i'd know that, wouldn't you? sheezle. um... 2-1-1, maybe? oops - just checked. 3-1-1. not bad! in the past 4 games, we've scored 15 goals. wow. that's impressive. we have gotten some solid talent in the middle of the field that has really freed up the front folks to take shots. it is nice to be winning some again.

this book i am reading right now -- king of lies -- turns out it's pretty good. the characters are compelling, especially the protagonist. the story is developing well, with a hefty measure of suspense. there have been a couple too-convenient developments, but i believe this is the author's debut novel, so we can forgive that. and, really, you find that sort of convenience or coincidence or whatever you'd call it -- you find it in real life, too. so, i guess it's not unexpected in a novel, and it has not been put to terrible use in this book. not like inkheart. that was, like, a practice in convenient props & plot devices.

looks like the weather will be fairly good this week. some chances of rain, but nothing too serious -- probably have some showers here & there, but not for a whole day. another cold front is coming through, because it is autumn, and that means the air is getting cooler, the days shorter. i realize there are alot of folks who don't like autumn, but i do.

04 October 2008

19 years is a long time, eh?

today the weather was lovely, so i sat outside to balance the books & pay the bills after having cleaned the house & gone to the grocery. we are now watching vandy attempt to beat auburn.

that is all.

03 October 2008

i was sick. now i am not.

hey, kids! long time no talk to, eh? after peanut-butter-taffy-chat earlier this week, i got the dreaded 24-hour stomach flu. let me tell you, that little bugger rips through you like a train on greased rails. yeah. that's really all you need to know about that.

there are more important issues brewing. some, i didn't even know about. one, at the tippity top of the list now - washer odor. o-m-g -- how did we muddle through life all this time with washer odor! thank heavens for affresh: the washer cleaner! now, we do not need to live with the stigma of washer odor ever again!

on the docket for tomorrow - various & assundry tasks & chores ranging from housecleaning to returning liberry books to paying bills to cleaning out the closet to getting groceries. too much? perhaps. vandy plays at 5pm on e-s-p-n. all must be completed by then, no doubt!
