sitting across the table from my future

when we had lunch today i noticed
he had missed a patch of whisker
right under his nose
(ironic?)
and wondered what the hell is up with his hair
did he give up brushing it altogether
he talked about his first wife
in a way that made me
made me feel completely at home

alone
and he asked about the salmon wrap
is it good
and i just couldn't tell him
that is what you ate when we were here before
so we talked about his grandchildren
and his face lit up

up
and i knew then i was sitting across the table
