took my meaning and twisted it like a baggy tie, choking off the burgeoning goodwill in the office

a few days ago, i sent out an email at work about the shared fridge. there were, in the icebox: a rotting bag of spinach, an open can of soda, and a couple containers filled with mystery. sometime between my email & this morning, someone took it upon him or herself to clear it out. i know this happened b/c this morning, one of my coworkers came by to ask if i had thrown the stuff out. no - i replied - i did not. she was upset b/c someone threw out her marked container. that's right - you heard me correctly: her container was marked with her name, and someone threw it out without consulting her. she didn't actually think it was me, but she was checking b/c i sent out the email. i assured her that i sent out the email precisely b/c i would never presume to remove other people's things from the shared fridge. it's bothersome to imagine that someone would build from my email the belief that he or she should take initiative to throw out the belongings of other people. i was asking people to take charge of their own stuff, not trample all over other people's stuff.
