today at work i...

...noticed a sign on the vending machine - "machine owes vanessa .90 cents!" putting aside for the moment the fact that i do not believe vanessa is owed 9/10ths of a cent - but rather - 90¢ -- the note on the machine caught my attn b/c it was on bright blue post-it with big black sharpie lettering. so, i read it. another coworker approached the machine & said hello to me. i said hi, and that i was just reading the note and thought the machine might be broken. i was trying to warn her, you see, not to lose her money. she said - «it wasn't broken the other day.» i just smiled and walked away because she had so clearly established that what was working the other day could in no way have failed between then & now, so it must be working now.

...passed by the machine on my way back to my cubby from the front desk, where i had been collecting packages due to me - a description of which adventure follows thusly. i approached the front desk & noticed the guard was not looking at approachees, and it appeared she was on the phone b/c she was holding her hand [covered by her jacket] up to her head. not sure why she'd have to cover the phone w/ her jacket, but anyhootle, i approached & signed the register verifying acceptance of the packages. i waited a moment, watching her, and realized she was not on the phone. also realized she appeared to be playing solitaire on the computer - the distinctive mouse movements & clicks gave her away. so, i spoke up - «i'm here to collect those packages.» she said - «oh! please sign the register.» i said - «i already did that.» she said - «oh! haha! i know i am not feeling well, but didn't realize that i was that out of it.» hrm. did i mention she is the guard at the front desk which faces a front door which faces a high crime bus terminal? seems like it might be helpful if she were, you know, aware of her surroundings.
