what are words for

i don't know what to tell you now -
just don't know what to say.
i don't know how to make it right -
can't make it go away.

they say you can't go home again
and say what's done is done.
you can't go back and change the past:
the future has begun.

all the words that would have fit
are old and tired and trite.
and anything i could have said,
or should have said, or might....

is it too late for talking -
too late to clear the air?
i need a chance, just one more chance,
to tell you that i care.

i care for your tomorrow,
and i care for your today,
but mostly i just care for you
in a nearly painful way.
